Ok, guys. I’ll admit it: I cheated; I DVRed the Tony Awards.
Some of you may be thinking, “So what?” But awards shows are meant to be watched live. If you fast forward to all the parts that look interesting at high speeds, you might miss some random hilarious moments (like the Jaws music at the Oscars this year).
But this year’s Tony Awards coincided with the season finale of Game of Thrones, and the fantasy nerd within me won out over the theater nerd.
So on Monday evening, I settled down to watch the Tony Awards with my new puppy:
Sorry, I just had to throw that in there. (She’s so darn cute!) Anyways, here are some of my random observations:
-The opening number was pretty delightful. Neil Patrick Harris is just such a great host, and there’s a really sweet line about how all of them used to watch the Tonys when they were kids:
-The Matilda set and choreography for “Revolting Children” really reminded me of the “Totally F*cked” song from Spring Awakening.
-They did a scene from the Phantom of the Opera to celebrate its 25thanniversary on Broadway, and I was just so impressed by the set. Did they build that whole moving boat contraption for just that one performance? Or did they move it from its home theater? I guess what I’m saying is that live theater is MAGICAL.
-Cyndi Lauper was the first woman to win a Tony award for Best Score without partnering with a man. She won for Kinky Boots, which also won Best Musical.
-Neil Patrick Harris basically made out with the dog from Annie. It was kind of cute, but kind of weird.
All in all, despite my fast forwarding, it looked like these Tony Awards were the best they’ve had in years! What did you guys think?
