2014: The Year of the Movie Musical, Apparently

I woke up this morning to the news that a trailer had been released for Jersey Boys. I hadn’t even realized they were making that musical into a movie! I’ve been spending months Googling “into the woods movie” and “the last five years movie,” looking for any scraps of information, but I completely missed the fact that Jersey Boys was about to exist.

If you pay really pay attention the trailer, you’ll see that it was directed by Clint Eastwood, which I was not expecting. Nor was I expecting the story to be about the mob. In truth, I’ve never seen a stage production of the musical, so I never actually knew what the story was about.

Feeling shockingly out of the loop, I turned to Google to find out just how much I’ve been missing about the world of musical films. Quite a bit, it turns out. Apparently a remake of Annie is coming out, and that trailer has been out for a month!

Did I cry a little bit when Quvenzhané Wallis (the youngest actress to ever receive an Oscar nomination for her role in Beasts of the Southern Wild) started singing Tomorrow? Maybe. I’ll never tell.

Then I discovered a new film, Begin Again:

Now just from the trailer, I wouldn’t categorize this as a movie musical, but it was written and directed by John Carney, the writer/director of Once, which went on to become a Tony-winning musical. Also, Adam Levine and CeeLo Green are in it, which makes me laugh a little.

So there are THREE more movie musicals than I knew about to look forward to, and all three of them already have plenty of content to watch and listen to. In contrast, all I’ve heard about the Into the Woods movie so far is that Meryl Streep had to learn how to rap for her role the Witch.

Now am I missing any others? I certainly hope not. I don’t think I can handle more than 5 movie musicals in one year.
